Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Well-being among Nurses of Intensive Care Units in Hospitals Affiliated to Babol University of Medical Sciences: 2017

Background: Emotional intelligence (EI) allows the nurses to think better in difficult situations and increase the sense of well-being (WB) in work through overcoming stress. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between EI and WB among nurses of intensive care units (ICUs) in hospitals affiliated to Babol University of Medical Sciences.
Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study was conducted on 165 nurses of ICUs in 2017. Data were collected using EI and WB questionnaires containing 33 and 29 questions, respectively. Data were analyzed by SPSS using descriptive and analytical statistics (mean, standard deviation, Chi-square and Pearson correlation).
Findings: Of 165 nurses, 124 (74.2%), 146 (88.5%), 77 (46.7%) and 114 (69.1%) persons were female, bachelor, 25-35 years old, married and 105 (63.3%) had less than 10 years of work experience, respectively. The majority of research samples (58.8%) had moderate EI and (58.2%) had moderate WB in their work. Spearman correlation test showed that there was no significant correlation between the mean of EI and WB level among nurses of ICUs (P = 0.761 & r0.024)
Conclusion: The results indicated that there was no significant relationship between the means of EI and WB in work but these means were moderate among the nurses. It is recommended to hold proper training courses in clinical and academic environments to improve the EI skills.
