Assessment of performance of Work Teams in of Abadan School of Medical Sciences: Managers and Experts' Perspectives

Background: Creating and developing of work teams as one of the most suitable strategies for optimal use of existing capacities are always emphasized by organizations. The aim of this study was to know the work teams and evaluate their performance in Abadan School of Medical Sciences (ASMS).
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on managers and experts of ASMS, who were selected through census method in summer 2014. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire including 8 demographic variables and 9 questions related with work teams and self-administered method. Data were analyzed using SPSS23 at a significant level of α<0.05.
Findings: Of the 139 subjects, 95 (68.3%) persons were the members of at least one work team to a maximum of eight work teams and totally were the members of 262 work teams. In terms of organizational domains, 224 (85.5%), 27 (10.3%) and 11 (4.2%) were domestic, academic and provincial teams, respectively. In a total, 80% of the membership was based on official announcement, and 68.8% based on the invitation to the meetings. Deployment level, assessment, renovation and effectiveness of work teams with the highest score of 5 were 3.25±0.9, 3.16±1.0, 3.32±1.0, respectively. There was a significant difference among education, occupation and deployment level, among workplace, occupation and assessment and renovation, and among education, workplace, occupation, organizational rank and effectiveness of work teams (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The study indicated that about two-thirds of people in the work teams had moderate performance. It is recommended to design and implement the intervention programs leading to improved performance.
